Bob moved to Ashland as a young boy graduating from Ashland High School in 1946.  He worked at L.W. Packard and played on the local baseball team. Bob was a talented baseball pitcher. He was scouted by the Detroit Tigers and offered a contract to pitch for them but had already made a commitment to serve his country.  Nick-named “Herr Fuss” by German friends for his large feet, he served for four years in the Air Force in Germany before marrying Caroline Norman. His 20-year military career took the family back to Germany, as well as Virginia, Maryland – while he served one year in Alaska –  and Idaho.  During his time in the military, he was a firetruck mechanic and firefighter on the flight line, then became a fire safety inspector. After retiring, he and Caroline lived in Plymouth, NH for sixteen years before returning to Ashland permanently. In his second career, he worked for Grinnell Sprinkler Systems. Bob was very civic minded, volunteering as a meter reader for years, and serving  on the Ashland Planning Board and the Water Sewer Commission.
