Walter F Lewis

Lewis, Walter F. 88 of Gilford, formerly of Thornton NH and Winthrop Massachusetts, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on April 19, 2024 after a long illness.

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Maureen and his 6 children, Denise Murphy (David) of Pawcatuck, CT, Donald Lewis of Thornton, Steven Lewis of Campton, Debra Carmack (Michael) of Pawcatuck, CT, Patrick Lewis (Andrew Salesi) of Boca Raton, FL and Michael Lewis (Samantha Quinney) of Gilford.  He was the proud grandfather of 9 and great-grandfather (G-Papa) to 13.

Born and raised in Winthrop, Mass, a waterfront suburb of Boston, Walter’s love of the water, sailing and boating started at a young age.  He was a Life Member of the Pleasant Park Yacht Club in Winthrop and sailed his 210 “Top Banana” across the harbors of Boston and Marblehead.

Walter’s career was spent in telecommunications beginning as the “Phone Man” – installing the first phone lines to homes across Boston with New England Telephone then Nynex and eventually AT&T.  He spent time at the Massachusetts State House updating their phone systems in the 1980’s and 1990’s.  He was an avid skier and loved the mountains of New Hampshire.  In 1995 he moved to Thornton NH where he could enjoy the mountains and lakes with his family.   He loved being surrounded by family and was always a great storyteller.

The family would like to thank the countless doctors and nurses who have cared for him over the years. 

A Wake and Memorial Service will be held at Dupuis Funeral Home, 11 Hill Avenue Ashland NH on Tuesday April 23, 2024.  Visitation 10-12, and at Noon there will be a time for sharing.
