Guinevere “Gwen” (Downing) Newton

Guinevere “Gwen” [Downing] Newton, 102, died at her home surrounded by her family on February 24, 2016. Born in Wentworth, NH. on September 17, 1913 she was the daughter of Walter and Ethel [Brown] Downing. Gwen moved to Ashland to finish High School and lived there the rest of her life. She graduated from Ashland High in 1932. Following her school years Gwen was a long time employee of the Packard Woolen Mill. Her biggest enjoyment was being outside. She fished and hiked many of the streams and mountains of the White Mountains. She introduced her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to these sports. She was an active member of the Over the Hill hikers in Sandwich, NH. She had scaled 33 of the 48/4000 footer mountains in NH and many more than once. Her favorite was Mt Washington. Her last hikes were at age 88. She cross country and downhill skied until age 88. She was a member of the Silver Streaks at Waterville Valley Ski area. She enjoyed ski vacations in CO, UT, NV, and Canada. Her flowers and vegetable gardens were her joy. Gwen was an active member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Ashland, serving as a deacon, trustee, and Sunday school teacher. For many years she was a Democrat check in person at town elections. She belonged to the Ashland Historical Society and the Ashland Women’s Club. She delivered meals-on-wheels for years, volunteered at the Little Red Schoolhouse Craft Shop in Campton and at the Ashland Community Center. Guinevere was predeceased by her parents, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, and her husband of 55 years Richard in 1996. She is survived by her 2 daughters Sharon [Roland] St.Onge of Bow, NH. and Elaine [George] Radcliff of Concord, NH., and her son Ronald Newton of Ashland. She leaves 7 Grandchildren, 14 Great-Grandchildren, and 1 Great-Great Granddaughter. According to her wishes there will be no calling hours or services.
