DOROTHY “FIDDY” FORBES
She was born on April 18, 1939 in Plymouth and grew up in Holderness Dorothy was the biological daughter of Barbara Forbes Burns and the adopted daughter of her grandparents, Arthur W. and Dorothy H. Forbes of Holderness.
Dorothy attended the one room school house in Holderness “Bridge” School, and then attended Junior High and Plymouth High in Plymouth. After raising a family, she began working for the New England Telephone Company in Laconia, later on transferred to Concord and onto Somersworth. After retirement from the telephone company she worked at Lakes Region General Healthcare and the Laconia Clinic, retiring from the clinic in 2009 due to ill health.
She was the organist and choir director for the Holderness Community Church for many years. She also was the organist on Church Island on Squam Lake for summer Sunday Services and played for many weddings on the island.
In 1976 the family moved to Gilford where she has made her home ever since. Dorothy enjoyed cooking and having family and friends for dinner parties. Playing her piano, adding to her collection of movies and memorabilia. Concerts and attending plays were an important part of her life. In past years she skied in New Hampshire, Switzerland, Austria, and Italy. She spent many summers sailing on Lake Winnipesaukee and enjoyed sailing trips to the British Virgin Islands. Bermuda was also one of her favorite places to vacation.
She was predeceased by her parents and an infant son, Timothy McBride and her beloved companion of many years Walter T. McNamara in 2012.
Dorothy is survived by a son Thomas McBride of Englewood, FL, and four daughters, Betsy McBride Haslett of Gilmanton, Jennifer Forbes Caldwell of Charlestown, NH., Alison Forbes Morin of Gilford, and Jacqueline Forbes Harzmovitch of Laconia. Eleven Grandchildren and five Great-Grandchildren. Two sisters, Barbara Burns of Gilford and Elizabeth Burns Vashaw of Venice, FL.
At Dorothy’s request there will be no calling hours. A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at the family plot in Green Grove Cemetery in Ashland, NH on Saturday, May 7th at 11:00am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of floral gifts, donations may be made to the NH Humane Society.
